Gold Credit Card Offers - Is It Really What You Need?

[November 02, 2007]

Silver Credit Cards were introduced in 1950. Soon after that credit companies realized that they needed to introduce some new credit card offer. The one that would be more special. The one that will attract customers that are well off and that will fully reflect such clients' financial status. Such credit card should offer the best benefits. Pretty soon such card was invented. Most of us have heard about gold credit cards but few of us actually have it.

Many people wonder if these gold cards are that great. Or maybe there is simply too much noise around them? Undoubtedly, gold offers have a number of super advantages:

1. Gold cards have much higher credit limits. One should have a high income in order to be able to apply.

2. These plastics usually have higher withdrawal limits.

3. They have the best rewards packages. For instance, in comparison with usual cards, the owner of a gold card can get more miles for frequent flyer cards. If it is a cash rebates card, then gold card consumers get much higher percentage on cash return.

4. Gold credit cardholders have a 0% rate from 6 after 9 months transferring the credit balance to another credit.

5. And certainly gold cardholders get the best travel benefits, for instance, automatic upgrading while traveling.

6. The most special thing about these cards is that their owners get attention and respect from others.

A friend of mine has got a Gold Visa credit card and he really thinks it the ever-best thing he has! Bob takes care of his image as he is a much respected businessman. He says that he enjoys his card's benefit, so called - a 24 hour online account access, the most. What Bob likes is being in total control of his money spending. Bob also claims that his card is top secured. And there are no doubts about it since the owners of such cards are typically well off and their personal data certainly needs to be confidential.

Nevertheless, privilege credit cards also have some minuses, so to say, some disadvantages:

1. These credit cards have much higher membership fees

2. You have to have a pretty high salary in order to be eligible to apply;

When applying for a gold credit card, you have to understand that it is not guaranteed that you will have a high credit limit. It is not only your salary that influences credit card companies' and banks' decision to provide you with high limit, but your credit history as well. If you used to have debts once, it is very possible that the credit line will be somewhat lower than you expected.

My brother was applying for a gold credit card some time ago. Even though he has got an average salary, he was qualified to get a card. Some time has passed now that he has got a gold plastic but he says he finds nothing that special about it. It was a surprise to as I knew that Bob just adores it. I gave it a thought. Maybe these gold credit cards seem special only for those who care about their image a lot. These people do want others to know that they are financially more secured, whereas for an average people it is just a regular card, not more.

Raising your credit score involves several steps. You need to get new credit and prove that you can pay your bills on time. However, qualifying for a new plastic can be difficult if your FICO score is less than 660 points. Nowadays more than 70 million people in the U.S. find themselves in this category. The solution for them is subprime credit cards. Although these plastics come with higher borrowing costs, they really work. A recent research conducted by Citizens for Equal Access to Credit showed that a large percentage of subprime cardholders improved their FICO score during 2 years!

As the Wall Street mistakes have pulled the nation into the financial mess, ordinary consumers are losing jobs and having hard time borrowing for major expenses. It shouldn't seem odd to think about getting another loan or a credit card today, because you still need a home and your child needs education. If you've lost a job, a bank card with reasonable rates and substantial limit can help stand firm for a while.
The credit score, the figure showing the borrowing risk, becomes the major factor in the lender's decision. It allows good risk consumers to get a good credit card at favorable terms and pass the crisis safe. But as the requirements are tougher each new day, it is important for you as a borrower to maintain or achieve good payment history and solid FICO scores.
