Negotiating Credit Card Offers Can Mean Significant Rewards
Negotiating Credit Card Offers
[June 29, 2007]
There are a lot of credit card offers on the table these days. Because Americans are crazy for credit and shopping and wracking up huge debt, this is not surprising!
You should be very careful with credit cards and all kinds of debt so that you do not compromise your financial security or your ability to retire comfortably. Using credit responsibly is an important part of your financial picture, your credit rating and your future comfort.
While this is true, there are some really rewarding balance transfer credit card offers out there that you may want to seriously consider taking advantage of. Credit cards that offer rewards points, travel points, discounted retail shopping and low interest rates and no annual fee can also work very well for you in your overall financial approach to your life.
While you may simply feel that you should transfer all your business to a new Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express or any other kind of card that offers you what you want, you may in fact be able to negotiate yourself into a better deal with the card you already have.
What To Ask For From a Credit Card Company
You should analyze rewards that are currently being offered by the credit card companies now. Check out some of the advertisements you see or open up some of those unsolicited offers you have already chucked into the recycled paper bin. Get informed about what is on offer so that you can decide what you would like most from your credit card.
If you carry a balance on your credit card currently, your biggest benefit may be a lowered interest rate. If you can get a low rate and a fee free card you can shave quite a bit off your overall accumulation of debt over a year. This can be an excellent course of action for those interested in reducing their overall debt load.
If you do not carry a balance, the best credit card for you may be one that offers some kind of rewards. A card that gives points for travel, airmiles, or rental cars and hotels could be a great way to work toward some savings on your next holiday. This works very well if you are an organized individual who can charge all your monthly expenses to this kind of card to maximize the amount of rewards and simply pay the entire balance off at the end of the month. This way you get lots of reward points just for using the card on your regular monthly expenses that you have to pay anyways. Remember, this is not a good strategy for balances that carry forward because you will pay a lot in interest this way.
If you would simply prefer cash back on your credit card, then there are also cards that offer that kind of reward.
Start Talking To Your Bank
Once you have done a little research, you can start talking to your credit card companies. The first call you should make is to the ones you already carry. Tell them about the credit card offers and balance transfer credit card offers you have received or the rewards cards you have seen advertised. Let them know what you would like from your own card and ask for it. If you have decided you want a low rate on your card with no annual fees then state that and let them respond to you. They may make another offer that is not what you want in order to try to get you into another card. Be firm and keep asking them for the low rate you want. If they simply do not offer it, you may decide to go ahead and accept another credit card offer from another credit card company that does give you what you want.
Caution – Credit Report Contents Are Hot
Before you run off to call your credit card company and demand some kind of great credit card offer you must remember what the contents of your personal credit report are. If you have bad credit or have recently been recovering from less than excellent credit, you may not be in a good bargaining position. You may want to wait another year before you ask for a better deal. This will give you time to improve your rating and be in a better position for negotiations next year. If you don’t know where you stand on your credit score, contact one or all of the credit reporting agencies to get a current credit report on yourself. Then you will know if you are in a strong position to ask for the reward or perks that you really want.
If The Bank Says "No"
While negotiating with your banks and credit card companies for the rewards you want you may hear “no” a few times before you hear the “yes” that makes you smile. The key is often to remain calm and simply keep asking for what you want. Eventually you may hear that “yes”. Sometimes this is just because there are certain products that are being currently pushed by a lender and they want to sign as many people up to it as they can. If this isn’t for you and you keep asking for something else, they may move on to other products they have available including the ones you want.
The key in this whole matter is to be sure you are in a good position and knowing what you want. The rest is negotiation.

The credit score, the figure showing the borrowing risk, becomes the major factor in the lender's decision. It allows good risk consumers to get a good credit card at favorable terms and pass the crisis safe. But as the requirements are tougher each new day, it is important for you as a borrower to maintain or achieve good payment history and solid FICO scores.
